Quality Time Together: a wine and coffee industry seminar

Bar Norman and Junior’s Roasted Coffee present Quality Time Together, a fun opportunity for wine and coffee industry folks to come together to share knowledge, ask questions, and learn about two of the world’s favorite beverages.

Join us for a panel discussion featuring Jen Hurd (west coast manager for green coffee importer Genuine Origin), Mike Nelson (co-owner/co-founder of Junior's Roasted Coffee and Guilder Cafe), Brent Braun (co-owner/wine director of OK Omens), and Scott Frank (owner/winemaker of Bow & Arrow and Delicious Wines) that will explore the subject of quality in both coffee and wine. Panelists will discuss the factors used in determining quality, and how, in their roles, they market and talk about quality to prospective buyers and customers. They'll speak about the myths surrounding quality, and answer the common question if price should always attached to high quality coffees and wines.

A guided tasting through a variety of coffees and wines that both support and debunk the ideas around price as related to quality will follow the panel.

$18 (tickets here)

Hungarian Wine Tasting

The month of February has been designated as “Furmint Február” in Hungary, a full 28 days dedicated to celebrating the intriguing grape that makes the famed wines of Tokaj. Over the years, the month has evolved to include grapes from all over Hungary and celebrations reach as far as the UK and US. Bar Norman has been participating for the past few years, pouring beautiful white wines made from Furmint, and this year we’re very excited to offer a sit-down tasting of 10 Hungarian white wines hosted by local importer Tim Davey of Lone Wolf.

The tasting will be a study of two white varieties: Furmint and Hárslevelü, from two Hungarian regions: Tokaj and Somló, and will be a rare opportunity to taste through a variety of styles from some of the country’s most beloved winemakers. This is a seated, guided tasting.

Alessandro Viola patio tasting

Alessandro Viola patio tasting

The Viola family has always had a strong bond with their terroir, indigenous grapes, and wine in Northwestern Sicily. Alessandro and Aldo's father was a winegrower and produced some wine for domestic consumption. The brothers, impregnated with this culture, followed their own personal paths and went on separate winemaking journeys. Alessandro graduated in oenology and viticulture, and gained experience around the world (windsurfing as well as winemaking!) before deciding to come back home and solely focus on the family’s land. The visceral love for his Sicilian roots makes him a fervent advocate for native varieties that beautifully convey a sense of place when put in the right hands.

When discussing viticulture and the topic of chemicals arises, a slight smile appears on Alessandro’s face and he’ll respond, "but who are we to think we can do better than nature!?" Extremely respectful of his land, he simply mows with disks in between rows and plows by hand around the vines – usually once or twice per season.

Really looking forward to this Thursday’s patio tasting, featuring 4 dynamic wines from the incomparable Alessandro Viola. The wines are limited in supply, but we’ll have plenty on hand to taste, plus wines by the glass and bottle, too.

Thursday 8/18, 6-8pm, just drop in!
